You may have seen Internet photos of HP’s great tablet hope, the Slate 500, and the device’s goofy “label tray”. It’s a dedicated, physical pull-out card containing regulatory labels and information. It’s the high-tech-gadget equivalent of the infamous mattress tag.
Now, these disclosures are a reality of the electronics industry. There’s no escaping them, however annoying they are. The only realistic question is, how do you best display them? As we’ve seen, HP went with a fragile, moving piece of hardware. What did Apple do on its iPad?
They created a sort of “virtual label tray”. You know, in software. HP ought to look into that whole thing.
